Today, we bring you real, heart-stopping moments where defibrillators were the difference between despair and hope.
1. A Rival’s Rescue on the Basketball Court
In January 2025, during a high school basketball game in Oklahoma, 16-year-old Randy Vitales from Dover High School collapsed suddenly due to cardiac arrest. In a remarkable act of quick thinking and compassion, 18-year-old Magnus Miller from the opposing team, who was also a trained lifeguard, sprang into action. He immediately began CPR and utilised an on-site AED to deliver a life-saving shock, successfully restoring Randy’s heartbeat before paramedics arrived. Randy was later transported to Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, where he made a significant recovery. This incident not only underscores the critical importance of AEDs in public spaces but also highlights the profound impact of prompt action and proper training in emergency situations.

In 2016, 16-year-old Lexi, an avid athlete, was running on a treadmill at her local gym when she suddenly collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest. Fellow gym member Bill Sick witnessed the incident and, along with three others, immediately initiated CPR. Recognising the severity of the situation, they quickly retrieved the gym’s AED and delivered two shocks to Lexi’s heart. Their swift actions and the availability of the AED were pivotal in saving her life. Following her recovery, Lexi’s father, Shawn, became a passionate advocate for CPR and AED training, emphasising the importance of these life-saving tools in public spaces.
3. A Marching Band Practice Interrupted
On September 14, 2020, 17-year-old Maddie was preparing for marching band practice on her high school field. Deciding to run a few laps around the track, she suddenly collapsed due to sudden cardiac arrest. Fortunately, staff members were nearby and immediately sprang into action. They called 9-1-1, began CPR, and used an AED to restore Maddie’s heart rhythm. She was subsequently transported to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where doctors implanted an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to monitor and correct any future heart rhythm abnormalities. Inspired by her experience, Maddie has become an advocate for CPR training and the availability of AEDs in schools and public places, aiming to prevent sudden cardiac deaths among young individuals.

Medical professionals later emphasised that without the rapid response and use of the AED, the outcome could have been fatal.
